In many cultures, ancestors are remembered, honoured and asked for guidance. Ancestral rituals are a way of keeping that link with the people who came before you.
Shakir is based in Kenya and follows traditional African spiritual practice. We only describe what Shakir really practises, and we do not claim titles or lineage that cannot be shown to be true.
What the ritual involves
In many traditions, ancestral rituals include offerings of food, drink or herbs, calling the names of family members who have passed, and prayers for guidance and blessing. Shakir explains the materials and each step before the ritual begins.
Shakir asks about your family and what you want to honour or ask for. You only need to share what you know and are comfortable sharing.
The ritual can be done remotely, wherever you live, or in person, and Shakir can travel to you depending on your situation. How long it takes is agreed at the start.
What this service can and cannot do
It is meant for
- Remembering and honouring family members who have passed.
- Reconnecting with your family's cultural roots.
- Asking for ancestral blessing before a big decision or a new stage of life.
It cannot
- Settle disputes over a will, land or inheritance. Please speak to a lawyer about those.
- Replace grief counselling. If a loss is weighing on you, a counsellor or support group can help.
- Trace your family tree or prove where your ancestors came from. Records offices and family history services are better suited to that.

Common questions
Do I need to know my family history to take part?
No. Many people know only a little about their ancestors. Share what you know, and Shakir will work from there.
What tradition does Shakir follow?
Traditional African spiritual practice. Shakir is African by origin and based in Kenya. See the about page for more on Shakir's background.
Can I take part if I follow a different faith?
Yes. Shakir works with people of every faith and belief. Tell Shakir about your beliefs when you get in touch, so nothing is asked of you that does not sit right with you.
